Primary external roof material: Asphalt composition roof
20. Special features: Porch, fence, chimney
21. General architectural description:
720 Pine is a one-story wood framed house, rectangular in plan and situated on a narrow lot adjacent to a mid -
block north -south alley. The primary facade faces north to Pine Street. The foundation is concrete. Exterior
walls are clad with horizontal wood simple drop siding painted yellow, with simple trim painted white. The roof
is a cross gable with light gray asphalt shingles. Eaves are boxed, except at the front porch and rear addition,
where rafter tails are exposed. There is a center red brick chimney.
The front has an open porch that extends nearly the full width of the house. The porch roof is a front gable,
supported by two substantial battered wood columns resting on a battered knee wall clad with wood shingles.
Spanning between the two porch columns is a wooden roof beam with top moulding. The porch is one step up
from the concrete sidewalk. The front entrance door is red painted wood with an upper six -light window.
Flanking the entrance door are two large double hung wood sash windows painted white, with simple white trim,
and aluminum storm -screen units. The west side of the house, immediately adjacent to the alley, has three
sets of double -hung wood sash windows; the center set consists of three sash and the other two sets are pairs
of windows. The east side is only a few feet away from the adjacent house at 722 Pine (5BL11317). There is
one small, high window on this side. The south end of the house has a lower gable roof with exposed rafter
tails and may be a porch that was later enclosed. The siding on the west and south sides of the house has a
narrower profile and appears to be somewhat older than that on the rest of the house.
22. Architectural style/building type: Craftsman, Bungalow
23. Landscaping or special setting features: Jefferson Place Subdivision is a historic residential neighborhood
adjacent to downtown Louisville. The subdivision is laid out on a standard urban grid of narrow, deep lots with
rear alleys. Houses are built to a fairly consistent setback line along the streets with small front lawns, deep
rear yards and mature landscaping. Small, carefully maintained single-family residences predominate. Most of
the houses are wood framed, one or one and one-half stories in height, featuring white or light-colored
horizontal wood or steel siding, gabled or hipped asphalt shingled roofs and front porches. While many of the
houses have been modified over the years, most of the historic character -defining features have been
preserved.
720 Pine is consistent with these patterns and blends well with the scale and character of the neighborhood.
Situated on a narrow lot fronting an east -west street, only a few feet separate this house from its neighbor to the
east (722 Pine, 5BL11317). The front yard has an unfenced lawn extending to the concrete City sidewalk on
the north. On the west side, the house is built to the property line along the public, asphalt -paved alley. A tall
wood privacy fence separates the rear yard from the public alley and a vacated east -west alley to the south.
The south side of 720 Pine is one of several locations in Jefferson Place where a very narrow, ten -foot wide
east -west alley existed in the original plat. These narrow alleys were vacated in the 1980s and ownership was
deeded to the adjacent owners. The vacated alleys are still visible and mostly used for private off-street
parking.
24. Associated buildings, features, or objects: The back yard contains a small storage shed with a front gable roof
covered with gray asphalt shingles. Siding is vertical plywood panel siding, painted yellow, with simple wood
trim painted white. The shed has a large swinging door on the west side and two white aluminum slider
windows.
2
