Roof configuration: Front gabled roof
19. Primary external roof material: Asphalt composition roof
20. Special features: Porch, fence, chimney
21. General architectural description:
722 Pine is a one-story wood framed house, rectangular in plan and situated on a narrow mid -block lot. The
primary facade faces north to Pine Street. The foundation is concrete. Exterior walls are clad with horizontal
wood simple drop siding painted light gray/green, with simple trim painted dark green. The roof is a front gable
with dark gray asphalt shingles. Rafter tails are exposed around the entire perimeter. There is a center red
brick chimney.
The front has an open porch that extends nearly the full width of the house. The porch roof is a front gable,
supported by two substantial battered wood columns resting on a battered knee wall clad with wood shingles.
Spanning between the two porch columns is a wooden roof beam with top moulding. The porch is one step up
from the concrete sidewalk. The front entrance door is red painted wood with an upper six -light window.
Flanking the entrance door are two large double hung wood sash windows painted green, with simple green
trim, and aluminum storm -screen units. The west side of the house has one double -hung window, wood sash
painted green, near the north end. Near the south end of this side, there is an assemblage of three wood sash
double hung windows. The east side is not clearly visible but has two large windows. The south side of the
house has an enclosed porch with a lower gabled roof. The south side has three side -by -side four -light
windows. There is a smaller shed -roofed addition at the west end of the south side.
22. Architectural style/building type: Craftsman, Bungalow
23. Landscaping or special setting features: Jefferson Place Subdivision is a historic residential neighborhood
adjacent to downtown Louisville. The subdivision is laid out on a standard urban grid of narrow, deep lots with
rear alleys. Houses are built to a fairly consistent setback line along the streets with small front lawns, deep
rear yards and mature landscaping. Small, carefully maintained single-family residences predominate. Most of
the houses are wood framed, one or one and one-half stories in height, featuring white or light-colored
horizontal wood or steel siding, gabled or hipped asphalt shingled roofs and front porches. While many of the
houses have been modified over the years, most of the historic character -defining features have been
preserved.
722 Pine is consistent with these patterns and blends well with the scale and character of the neighborhood.
Situated on a narrow lot fronting an east -west street, only a few feet separate this house from its neighbor to the
west (720 Pine, 5BL11316). The front yard has an unfenced lawn extending to the concrete City sidewalk on
the north. On the east side, there is a narrow side yard filled with dense shrubs. A tall wood privacy fence
separates the rear yard from a vacated east -west alley to the south. The south side of 722 Pine is one of
several locations in Jefferson Place where a very narrow, ten -foot wide east -west alley existed in the original
plat. These narrow alleys were vacated in the 1980s and ownership was deeded to the adjacent owners. The
vacated alleys are still visible and mostly used for private off-street parking.
24. Associated buildings, features, or objects: The back yard is not visible but does not appear to contain any
outbuildings.
IV. ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY
25. Date of Construction: Estimate: c. 1908 Actual:
Source of information: Sanborn maps
26. Architect: Unknown
Source of information: N/A
2
