Area(s) of significance (National Register): NA
40. Period of significance: NA
41. Level of significance: National State Local NA
42. Statement of significance: This house is associated with the historic development of Louisville as one of the late
nineteenth-century homes in Louisville's first residential subdivision, Jefferson Place. Although Jefferson Place
was platted in 1880, few homes were built before 1900, so this is one of the earliest homes in the subdivision. It
is significant for its long, 120-year association with the Thomas family who formed companies that operated the
local Sunnyside and Fireside Mines. It is significant for its association with early European (Great Britain)
immigrants who came to Louisville in search of mining work, and it is significant as a good example of late
Victorian (Queen Anne) architecture in Louisville.
43. Assessment of historic physical integrity related to significance: The property has good integrity overall. It has
integrity of location, design, feeling, association and workmanship. Integrity of design is somewhat
compromised by modifications in window and door openings facing east, but these are not extensive enough to
result in a complete loss of design integrity. Integrity of materials has been lost due to replacement siding.
Integrity of setting is compromised, but not entirely lost, due to a major reduction in the size of the property
when three of the five original lots were sold and a new house built very closely to the west. The modification to
the front entry represents a loss of integrity, if it dates from the period of significance, but the date of this
modification is not known.
7
