Resource Number: 5BL7359
Temporary Resource Number: 157508425005
18. Roof configuration: Front gabled roof
19. Primary external roof material: Asphalt composition roof
20. Special features: Porch, fence
21. General architectural description:
817 Pine is a one-story, wood framed house with a two-story addition at the rear (north). The primary elevation
faces south to Pine Street. The plan is basically rectangular, although the two-story portion is somewhat wider
than the one-story section. The roof is a front gable, covered with brown asphalt shingles. The exterior wall
finish material is a non -historic, light tan, lightly -textured synthetic stucco with rounded corners. There are some
historic wood sash slider and single hung windows. Windows on the two-story portion are aluminum sliders. All
windows are inset into the stucco and trimmed with non -historic, projecting stucco surrounds and sills. Wood
windows are painted dark coral. Windows on the front facade have decorative applied corbelled wood lintels.
There is a large, non -historic "picture" window on the front facade next to the entrance. The front entrance has
a concrete stoop but no porch or porch roof. The front door is solid wood, painted dark coral. There is a
bronze -colored cruciform metal scrollwork wall ornament on the front gable. On the north side of the house,
there is a porch sheltered by an open trellis of unpainted wood structure with a top wooden lattice.
22. Architectural style/building type: No style
23. Landscaping or special setting features: Jefferson Place Subdivision is a historic residential neighborhood
adjacent to downtown Louisville. The subdivision is laid out on a standard urban grid of narrow, deep lots with
rear alleys. Houses are built to a fairly consistent setback line along the streets with small front lawns, deep
rear yards and mature landscaping. Small, carefully maintained single-family residences predominate. Most of
the houses are wood framed, one or one and one-half stories in height, featuring white or light-colored
horizontal wood or steel siding, gabled or hipped asphalt shingled roofs and front porches. While many of the
houses have been modified over the years, most of the historic character -defining features have been
preserved.
817 Pine is an unusual example of exterior stucco as a finish material in Jefferson Place. Stucco is not the
original finish material on this house. The house is unusual for its lack of a front porch, for its two-story addition,
and for its Spanish Eclectic detailing.
The house is set very close to the sidewalk on Pine and very close to the public alley to the east. Stone edging
defines the edge of the alley. There is a small front yard separated from the sidewalk and alley with a low wood
picket fence. The front yard has small plantings and mulch, a low concrete patio in front of the house, and a
brick and flagstone path leading to the back yard along the west side of the house. The back yard is enclosed
with a 6 foot wood privacy fence and is not visible.
24. Associated buildings, features, or objects: There is a wooden shed in the back yard with composition siding, a
shallow gable roof with asphalt shingles, and a pair of swinging doors facing south.
IV.
