Resource Number: 5BL7359
Temporary Resource Number: 157508425005
ownership of 817 Pine to George's sister and her husband, Rose and James Gilmour, while maintaining ownership of
809 Pine.
Rose Sirokman Gilmour was born in 1900 in Louisville to George and Mary Sirokman. She married James Gilmour in
1921. He was born in 1900 and, according to the 1930 census, worked as a miner. The 1930 census shows the
Gilmour family as living in this location. The 1930 census records also show George Jr. and Mildred as living next
door at 809 Pine with their children. Property records show that in 1930, George Jr. and Mildred conveyed 809 Pine
to George's (and Rose's) parents, George and Mary Sirokman. Thus, Rose Gilmour first lived next to her brother,
then next to her parents in their retirement. Additional information about the Sirokman family is given in the report on
809 Pine.
Rose and James Gilmour divorced in 1937, at which point he conveyed his interest in 817 Pine to their daughter,
Dorothy Gilmour. He died in 1944. Rose married Fred Michel (born 1900) in 1943. According to a Sirokman family
history, Rose Gilmour at one time had a beauty shop in her home at 817 Pine. However, a business listing in
Louisville directories was not located. Rose died in 1979, and Fred Michel died in 1981.
In 1950, Dorothy Gilmour Horvat sold 817 Pine to Martha and Emelio Petrelli, and they appear in the 1951 directory
as residing there. They were followed by owners Floyd and Katherine Elrod, who were listed at this address in the
1952-53 directory. In 1953, Robert Varra and his mother, Elizabeth Varra, purchased 817 Pine. Elizabeth Varra (with
her husband, Albert) owned and operated Varra's Market, located very close by at 700 Main Street (5BL961.5) , from
the 1950s to the 1960s. In 1960, 817 Pine became the property of Robert Varra and his wife, Carolyn. Robert Varra
worked as a Clerk at Varra's Market. They owned and lived at 817 Pine until 1972. A number of owners followed,
with no one owning the property for more than five years at a time until 2001, when the current owners, Cameron
Weise and Ann Lukens Weise, purchased it.
36.
