Resource Number: 5BL 926
Temporary Resource Number: 157508426003
20. Special features: Porch, fence
21. General architectural description: 712 Spruce is a wood -framed, one-story residence, rectangular in plan, with
its primary facade facing north to Spruce Street. The roof is front gabled with gray/brown asphalt shingles.
Exterior siding is horizontal wood drop siding painted light yellow with wood trim painted sage green. The
foundation is painted stone. There is a hip -roofed projecting bay on the west side and a small shed -roofed
enclosed porch at the south end of the house. The front entrance has a slightly recessed porch sheltered by a
projecting gable roof on two simple round wood columns with capitals and bases. The gables are trimmed with
wood moulding. Gable siding consists of painted square -edged wood shingles. At the front porch, the gable
siding is slightly flared at the base of the gable; on the main house, gable siding is flat. The porch has a painted
wooden bead board soffit, painted concrete stoop and four painted stone steps up from the City sidewalk, with
non -historic black wrought iron railings. There is a possibly historic copper porch ceiling light fixture with drop
frosted glass. The front door is possibly historic, clear finish wood with carved trim and a large glass light. West
of the door is a fixed window with diamond -pane leaded glass. The typical windows on the house are double -
hung 1/1 wood sash with simple jamb and sill trim. Window heads are trimmed with wood moulding.
22. Architectural style/building type: Other style: Wood frame front gable
23. Landscaping or special setting features: Jefferson Place Subdivision is a historic residential neighborhood
adjacent to downtown Louisville. The subdivision is laid out on a standard urban grid of narrow, deep lots with
rear alleys. Houses are built to a fairly consistent setback line along the streets with small front lawns, deep
rear yards and mature landscaping. Small, carefully maintained single-family residences predominate. Most of
the houses are wood framed, one or one and one-half stories in height, featuring white or light-colored
horizontal wood or steel siding, gabled or hipped asphalt shingled roofs and front porches. While many of the
houses have been modified over the years, most of the historic character -defining features have been
preserved. 712 Spruce Street is consistent with these patterns and blends well with the scale and character of
the neighborhood. 712 and its neighbor 700 Spruce are somewhat unusual examples of residences on Spruce
Street, which historically had mostly commercial uses. 712 Spruce is set close to Spruce with a very shallow
front yard that is open to the City sidewalk. The front yard has a lawn, aspen trees and shrubs. Along Spruce,
there is a narrow strip of grass between the City sidewalk and the street curb. The house has a very small back
yard with a wire fence. To the east there is an asphalt alley.
24. Associated buildings, features, or objects: None.
IV. It does not appear to have been modified substantially since then. No
building permits were found indicating modifications, and the 1948 Boulder County Assessor's floor plan sketch
matches the existing construction.
