Special features: Porch, fence
21. General architectural description:
801 Spruce is a one-story wood -frame house, L-shaped in plan. The house faces south to Spruce Street. It has a
concrete foundation painted gray. The exterior is clad with narrow wood lap siding painted light gray -blue, except for
the east end of the north elevation, which has simple drop siding. Corner trim is 1x4, painted white. The cross gable
roof has light gray asphalt shingles and eaves are boxed. The north side has two side -by -side parallel gable roofs.
The house appears to consist of two or possibly three simple gable -roofed cabins that have been put together.
Windows are mostly replacements, casements and double hung sash with simple white -painted wood trim. There
are two replacement double -hung windows on the south facade; one replacement casement and two historic 2/2
double hung windows with metal awnings on the west side; one small replacement double hung on the north; and a
historic casement flanked by two fixed sash on the east side.
The main entrance consists of a simple solid wood door painted dark red, with a small glass light. There is a red -
painted wood screen door. The entrance is sheltered by a small projecting gable roof supported by white brackets.
Two concrete steps lead up to a concrete stoop. On the north side of the house there is a rear entrance, which is
similar to the front: red -painted wood door with a glass light, a red -painted wooden screen door, and a small
projecting gable roof on wooden brackets. East of the back door, there is a sloped wooden hatch providing access to
the crawl space.
The northeast corner has a patio sheltered by a corrugated metal shed roof on gray wrought iron posts. There are
plywood walls enclosing the south and north sides of the patio.
22. Architectural style/building type: No style
23. Landscaping or special setting features: Landscape or special setting description: Jefferson Place Subdivision
is a historic residential neighborhood adjacent to downtown Louisville. The subdivision is laid out on a standard
urban grid of narrow, deep lots with rear alleys. Houses are built to a fairly consistent setback line along the
streets with small front lawns, deep rear yards and mature landscaping. Small, carefully maintained single-
family residences predominate. Most of the houses are wood framed, one or one and one-half stories in height,
featuring white or light-colored horizontal wood or steel siding, gabled or hipped asphalt shingled roofs and front
porches. While many of the houses have been modified over the years, most of the historic character -defining
features have been preserved. 801 Spruce is consistent with these patterns and blends well with the scale and
character of the neighborhood.
801 Spruce is a large corner lot. The property is enclosed by a white -painted wood picket fence on the west,
south and part of the east. The rest of the parcel has a chain -link fence. There are grassy yards to the east
and north of the house, and large trees in the north yard. A concrete walk north of the house, within the
enclosed yard, leads to a small shed at the east property line. There is a concrete driveway leading to LaFarge
Avenue at the north end of the lot. There is no garage.
24. Associated buildings, features, or objects: Shed
IV.
