Architectural style/building type: Other style: Wood frame gable front
23. Landscaping or special setting features: Jefferson Place Subdivision is a historic residential neighborhood
adjacent to downtown Louisville. The subdivision is laid out on a standard urban grid of narrow, deep lots with
rear alleys. Houses are built to a fairly consistent setback line along the streets with small front lawns, deep
rear yards and mature landscaping. Small, carefully maintained single-family residences predominate. Most of
the houses are wood framed, one or one and one-half stories in height, featuring white or light-colored
horizontal wood or steel siding, gabled or hipped asphalt shingled roofs and front porches. While many of the
houses have been modified over the years, most of the historic character -defining features have been
preserved. 709 Walnut Street is consistent with these patterns and blends well with the scale and character of
the neighborhood. It is located on a deep, narrow, mid -block lot and forms the center of a grouping of three
south -facing houses (701, 709 and 711 Walnut). The northern property line of these three houses is at one of
seven narrow, east -west alleys originally platted in Jefferson Place. These alleys were too narrow to
accommodate modern vehicles, so they were abandoned in the 1970s and the land deeded over to adjacent
property owners. 709 Walnut is set very close to the street and has a small front lawn that is open to the street.
There is a large maple tree in the front yard, and there is one in the back yard as well. The approach to the
house is by way of a concrete walk, leading up two concrete steps to a front porch and concrete stoop. A
smaller concrete walk leads to the back yard along the east side of the house.
The property is enclosed to the west with vinyl picket and panel fencing, and to the north with white vinyl privacy
fencing. The deep rear (north) and east yards are open to the adjacent property at 711 Walnut, which has the
same owner. An active, historic well is located between 709 and 711 Walnut, and is used by both properties for
irrigation. There are raised red brick planters along the east side of the house and a covered patio along the
north side.
24. Associated buildings, features, or objects: Between 709 and 711 Walnut there is a shared, historic, active well
with a red brick base and gable roof
IV. ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY
25.
