General architectural description:
711 Walnut is a one-story frame house, rectangular in plan, with its primary elevation facing south to Pine
Street. The foundation is concrete and the house has a full basement. Exterior walls are clad with light tan
brick veneer. There is a small open porch centered on the facade, sheltered by a projecting gable roof with
white aluminum gable siding and supported by black wrought iron posts. The house roof is hipped and
covered with brown asphalt shingles. Soffit material and gutters are white aluminum.
The main entrance door is natural dark stained wood flanked by a four -light wood sidelight. It has a white
aluminum storm door. Windows are white aluminum replacement windows with brick sills and no trim. West of
the entrance door is one single -hung window. Both walls at the southeast corner have a fixed "picture" window
flanked by a casement. The east side also has one single -hung window and a pair of single -hung windows,
plus two individual basement windows set in metal window wells.
Near the center of the west elevation there is a side door of natural dark wood with a single light and a white
aluminum storm door. The door opens onto a concrete stoop with two steps and sheltered by an aluminum
shed covering on two slender metal posts. There are four aluminum double -hung windows on this side of the
house, plus two basement windows in metal window wells.
The north side has an attached brick chimney, two aluminum single -hung windows, and an attached wood deck
covered by a shallow -sloped shed roof on wood posts. A partial wood lattice painted brown affords some
privacy from the adjacent alley.
22. Architectural style/building type: Ranch
23. Landscaping or special setting features: Jefferson Place Subdivision is a historic residential neighborhood
adjacent to downtown Louisville. The subdivision is laid out on a standard urban grid of narrow, deep lots with
rear alleys. Houses are built to a fairly consistent setback line along the streets with small front lawns, deep rear
yards and mature landscaping. Small, carefully maintained single-family residences predominate. Most of the
houses are wood framed, one or one and one-half stories in height, featuring white or light-colored horizontal
wood or steel siding, gabled or hipped asphalt shingled roofs and front porches. While many of the houses have
been modified over the years, there is a clear intent to preserve the historic character of the neighborhood.
711 Walnut is consistent with most of these patterns and blends well with the scale and character of the
neighborhood. It is a good example of a house that was built much more recently than the others, but with an
effort to retain the scale and character of the neighborhood. It differs from many of the other houses in that it is
a brick house, but the brick is light in color, which is consistent with the neighborhood color palette.
The front (south) side of the house features a small grass lawn with a concrete walk and concrete steps leading
up to the front porch. A white painted wood picket fence separates the front lawn from the east side alley.
There is a freestanding garage at the north end of the lot with a concrete apron and drive to the asphalt alley
east of the house. The rear yard has a covered wood deck attached to the house and a small lawn. The east
side of the house has a grass lawn and is open to the adjacent property which is under the same ownership.
Between the two houses is a 100-year-old well that still provides water used for irrigating the two properties.
The well has a non -historic cylindrical red brick wall and gable roof. A white six-foot fence separates the rear
yard from the north alley.
2
