From: sherry sommer
To: City Council
Subject: Board and Commission Appointments
Date: Monday, December 10, 2018 2:03:00 PM
Members of City Council,
A significant amount of time was spent discussing adherence to process as well as your desire to continually
improve the process of selection in appointments to Boards and Commissions.
I believe it is important not to select people by default simply because there are no other applicants in December.
Filling out an application and having a long history of service does not entitle anyone to further appointments. The
doubts that were raised were about one specific individual, Michael Menaker, but this would be applicable to any
candidate who raises doubts. The concerns that were raised about this candidate seemed perfectly reasonable and
balanced, and not at all a form of political vendetta.
If there are concerns about someone's effectiveness or ability of to be a constructive member of a team I believe
that the Council should put out a search for a better candidate in January and, if necessary, consider leaving a seat
unfilled until a good candidate is found. I have seen, time and time again, that having someone who is not a good fit
in a position creates more problems than it solves.
Sincerely,
Sherry Sommer
Sent from my iPhone
