Business Retention and Development Committee
Meeting Minutes
October 1, 2018
V. PUBLIC COMMENTS ON ITEMS NOT ON THE AGENDA: Caranci asked the BRaD
committee to review the sign code, when it is implemented, and how it is enforced.
His signage has been noticed as in violation. Caranci heard that a business had
trouble getting a sign approved. Caranci asked about an extension for his Grain
Elevator development, he said a planning commissioner stated "I'm watching this
project".
VI. BUSINESS MATTERS OF THE COMMITTEE:
1. Street Faire Review: DeJong presented the Street Faire review that was
submitted to City Council. Oberholzer said his business revenue was off
significantly on Street Faire nights vs. a normal Friday night. 4-5000 attendees
each night on average. DeJong noted that if community desires larger attendance,
then perhaps consider adjusting the layout of the venue to accommodate more
people.
Caranci noted he had trouble getting a booth at the Street Faire.
2. Louisville Business Forum Discussion: Housing was the most desired topic.
DeJong asked what type of presentation / message to communicate to businesses.
DeJong proposed a panel discussion with BCHA, a housing developer, and
primary employer discussing the challenge.
Oberholzer was interested in showing the recent growth and the demographics of
Louisville.
Discussion of the other topics to consider. Signage discussion. Transportation.
Marketing promotion efforts / new communications person. "Business State of the
City" meeting. A "What is and is not working" meeting.
It was decided to have the event discuss housing, parking, marketing, and signage
in `booths'. Include "What's working and not working" boxes, and a kickoff
presentation to briefly touch on each issue.
VII. ED Update. Mr. DeJong provided the Committee with an update on economic
development / commercial activity in Louisville, including the following items:
i. McCaslin Area RFP for market study of the Centennial Valley
commercial area.
ii. Downtown Parking Structure Conceptual Design process.
iii. Phillips 66 Parcel.
