LCity,f
Louisville
Parks & Recreation
Memorandum
To: Parks and Public Landscaping Advisory Board
From: Dean Johnson, Parks Superintendent
Date: 11/28/2018
Subject: Continued Discussion on Park Naming and Park Signage Project
Purpose:
The purpose of this agenda item is to continue the discussion on the Park Signage Project.
Background:
During the November PPLAB meeting, the Board was reintroduced to the park sign program. As
discussed, the intent of this program will be to sign all of the park sites. These small park signs
will include the park name and park rules.
For some of the sites, formal names have not been adopted. PPLAB has the opportunity to
advise and guide the City on selecting names for these sites. In advising, PPLAB could make a
direct name recommendation to Council, or recommend increased community outreach for
selecting a park name, or a combination. For example, the Open Space Advisory Board
recommend a name change for Coyote Run Open Space (previously call Tamarisk) which was
adopted by Council, so there is precedent for this course of action. Or, PPLAB could
recommend a larger community process for input, with outreach taking place at the subdivision
where the park resides or an even a larger approach, outreach conducted City-wide. An
example of what this type of process could look like would be a naming contest.
During the December meeting, PPLAB will also be discussing site location placement. Knowing
sign locations will assist staff in confirming the quantities for order.
Next Steps:
Discussion is planned to continue in upcoming meetings as needed for finalizing feedback on
park names or implementing a community naming process.
Also to occur in an upcoming meeting, will be a discussion on the current sign design in
comparison to related property signs. Consistency between public property sign designs will be
discussed and evaluated.
11
