PROCLAIMING <br />INDIGENOUS PEOPLE'S DAY <br />WHEREAS, Indigenous Peoples' Day was first proposed in 1977, by a delegation of Native <br />Nations to the United Nations International Conference on Discrimination <br />against Indigenous Populations in the Americas, and <br />WHEREAS the City Council recognizes that Indigenous Peoples have lived and flourished <br />in the Americas since time immemorial, and <br />WHEREAS, Colorado encompasses the ancestral homelands of 48 tribes and the Denver <br />metropolitan area is home to descendants of approximately 100 tribal nations; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, Indigenous Peoples were forced to leave their ancestral homelands sometimes <br />by violent means; and <br />WHEREAS, the City Council recognizes and values the contributions made to our <br />community through Indigenous Peoples' knowledge, science, philosophy, arts, <br />and culture, and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Louisville values inclusivity, racial equity and justice for all people; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Louisville recognizes its shared responsibility to honor our nation's <br />indigenous roots, history, traditions, and cultural contributions <br />NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert P Muckle, mayor of Louisville, Colorado do hereby proclaim the <br />second Monday of October each year as Indigenous People's Day to recognize the <br />foundational and cultural contributions of Indigenous Peoples to the history of our <br />community <br />DATED this 20TH day of August, 2019 <br />C4JV 'e 1 AA ;CU <br />Robert P Muckle, Mayor <br />ATTEST <br />Meredyth uth, City Clerk <br />
