Comments on the Proposed Public Art Placement: Robert Romero Sculpture for Community Park
Comments received by packet publication on 11/14/19 are included below. Comments received 11/15/19-11/20/19 will
be printed and available at the 11/21/19 LCC meeting.
From: Norman Thompson
To: Katie Zoss
Subject: Proposed purchase of sculpture by Robert Romero
Date: Wednesday, November 13, 2019 4:49:14 PM
Hi.
Thanks for the efforts by the LCC to purchase art for our community!
I love what Loveland has done with their sculpture garden. It is full of wonderful art in a great variety
of styles and materials. I love that Louisville is doing something similar.
Unfortunately, in this case, I find the proposed sculpture by Robert Romero to be BORING. Yep, it is
yet another boring piece of art that people will simply walk by and hardly notice. There are plenty of
these boring works of art scattered over the landscape in other cities. I'm not against any particular
type of art— be it abstract or representational.
You can do better. Please find some sculptures that are eye-catching that folks will stop at and say
things like, "Wow! That's cool!" Sculptures that make people stop and look at them. Sculptures that
will make people say to their friends, "You should see the new sculpture that they installed in
Community Park." I really can't envision folks saying these things about this proposed sculpture.
Thanks for considering my comments.
Norm Thompson
From: justin deister
To: ;Cabe Zoss
Subject: public art
Date: Wednesday, November 13, 2019 4:01:52 PM
Hi Katie,
Hope your break was nice and it's good to have you back at the City.
To summarize my thoughts about public art:
Instead of commissioned art researched, selected and chosen by committee,
(with community comment), it would be nice when it comes to commissions,
to establish and promote these opportunities for Louisville community artists.
There are probably a couple hundred artists in the Louisville community
who would have greatly enjoyed the opportunity to submit their art for a commission
and be selected for their own community.
This does not necessarily mean all art appearing in Louisville has to be selected
from local artists, but at least the opportunity is open to them.
The obvious means to do so would be a Call for Entry for Louisville residents
on the Louisville City website, and promoted via Louisville newsletter, newspapers,
Chamber news, etc.
Thanks,
Justin Deister
