Concept
Constructed in 2017, the DELO Underpass connects
businesses and residences on the north side of the railroad
tracks to downtown Louisville, providing a safe and
beautifully designed pathway for pedestrians and bicyclists
to "cross the tracks." The 30" tall, 70' long concrete walls
that support the black metal fencing in the underpass, and
the existing concrete sculpture pedestal set in the west end
landscaping, present a unique canvas for public art that
would enhance the cultural richness of the downtown area.
I am proposing a series of cut steel panels, ten on each side
of the low walls of the underpass, inset with colorful ceramic
elements, that explore abstract designs or themes inspired
by local animal, insect, and plant life. On the pedestal I am
visualizing an 8 to 10 foot tall pillar -like sculpture in steel
and ceramic that is thematically tied to the wall panels. The
steel components of these artworks will complement the
industrial nature of the railroad bridge while the lively shapes
of the designs will enliven the bare concrete of the
underpass.
Please note the drawings/designs illustrated here are
extremely preliminary.
Thank you!
