SUBJECT: ECONOMIC VITALITY COMMITTEE PURPOSE AND FUNCTION
DATE: NOVEMBER 20, 2020 PAGE 2 OF 2
meetings with the Chamber. There is not significant involvement with the Chamber
Board, though previously staff regularly attended the Chamber's events and activities.
There is some natural overlap between the City's Boards and Commissions, as well as
with the other organizations. The pandemic also seems to have created additional
overlap, where staff has frequently prepared similar informational reports and updates
for each of these groups, on the various meeting cycles. Where there is similarity, there
is also the distinction that the City's focus on economic vitality is inclusive of Louisville's
entire business community. The DBA and the Chamber both only represent groups
within our business community that become dues -paying members and align with their
organization's focus. Staff sees the most overlap between the EVC and BRaD; the LRC
has a very distinctive purpose and is also only focused on the defined Urban Renewal
Area. The BRaD Committee is currently operating with only five of the prescribed seven
members.
The future of the various groups was discussed at the November 10 Council meeting,
where there was agreement to explore potential restructuring. Councilmembers felt
strongly that the Economic Vitality Committee had been productive, but also shared
some concerns about how business involvement could be maintained.
Staff will be available at the EVC meeting to help answer any additional questions about
the workload related to the boards and organizations, the focus of the varied groups,
and potential revised structures the Committee could pursue.
RECOMMENDATION:
Discuss the purpose and future of the Economic Vitality Committee.
ATTACHMENTS:
None.
Agenda Packet P. 17
