COUNCIL COMMUNICATION

TO:
FROM:
DATE:

MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
MALCOLM FLEMING, CITY MANAGER
JAN UARY 13, 2009
2009 BOARD & COMMISSION WORK PLANS

SUBJECT:

ORIGINATING DEPARTMENT:

CITY MANAGER'S OFFICE

SUMMARY:

At least once each year staff schedules each board/commission to meet with City Council in a
Study Session. This year the City Manager is requesting that each board submit a proposed
work plan for the next year (one year from the date of the study session). That work plan and
its goals will be discussed with the City Council at the Study Session and then be taken to a
regular City Council meeting for approval.

The intent of this is for Council to approve the issues/projects each board should be actively
working on. This also means that staff time will be limited to those projects that have been
approved by City Council. Obviously, there will be some leeway for items that come up
unexpectedly, but the intent is for all of the boards to spend the majority of their time on those
projects the City Council agrees are of greatest importance. It is also a way for staff to be able
to know how best to allocate their time.

For those boards whose general activities are based on the review of applications to the City
(Board of Adjustment, Planning Commission, Liquor Authority), this will only relate to any
projects the board wishes to address outside of those normal application hearings.

FISCAL IMPACT:
There are no anticipated expenditures or savings; however this should help staff time allocation
and may free up some staff time for other projects.

RECOMMENDATION:
Discussion

ATTACHMENT(S):
Tentative schedule of City Council/Board study sessions.

SUBJECT

AGENDA ITEM

IE

2009 BOARD & COMMISSION
WORK PLANS

II

2
