City of Louisville
Energy Report
Third Quarter - 2008

Welcome to the City of Louisville Energy Report. This report contains information
about how the City of Louisville uses energy in its facilities and fleet. The Energy
Report is issued quarterly and will be distributed to building users as well as the
Council.

By tracking our energy consumption we can better understand how we use energy,
where to focus our energy conservation efforts and finally to determ ine the
effectiveness of any energy saving changes that have been made.

Although the City has over 50 sites which consume energy, the top nine (T9) sites
represent roughly 98% of the natural gas and electricity we consume. Therefore the
Energy Report will include data only from the top nine sites.

For the T9 sites data will be provided for both electricity and natural gas consumption
per day by month. Energy use per day is a more accurate way to track consumption
since months have different lengths and meter reading intervals are not constant.
Measuring use per day eliminates these month to month variations which can make it
more difficult to meaningfully compare one month with that of another.

In addition to the site data the following reports are included:
. Pie chart of total energy usage and costs for the T9.
. Cooling and Heating Degree Days - This data from the National Weather
Service can help us understand how the weather affects the heating and
cooling loads of our facilities
. Energy usage per square foot - This data is useful in comparing similar
facilities as well as comparing our facilities to those that meet certain energy
standards.
. Metric tons of carbon - This calculation includes energy use from the top nine
sites as well as all fuel consumed by the fleet.

Data Summary

For the first Energy report a great deal of effort was expended gathering data, data
entry and creating graphs for easier interpretation. Observations and first
impressions of the data:
. The remodel of City Hall which included new rooftop heating/cooling units and
energy efficient lighting has had a noticeable effect on energy consumption. A
good example of how the right equipment can save energy.
. Pumps consume a lot of energy as demonstrated by the electrical usage at the
water treatment and wastewater plants.

Energy Report
Facilities Management
City of Louisville

6

PDF created with pdfFactory trial version www.pdffactory.com
