SUBJECT: FUNDING TO ENHANCE DOWNTOWN PATIO PARKLETS
DATE: MAY 12, 2021 PAGE 2 OF 3
In 2019, the following Downtown businesses were participants in the annual patio
parklets program:
• Crystal Springs
• Verde
• Moxie Bread Co.
• The Huckleberry
• Zucca Italian Ristorante
• The Empire
• 12 Degree
• BOB'S Diner
• The Waterloo
• Pica's
In 2020, under the temporary Main Street closure, the following businesses also
requested to participate in outdoor dining:
• Punch Buggy Shave Ice
• LuLu's BBQ
• por wine house
• Bittersweet Cafe
• Giovannitti Coffee
• Sushi Yoshi
There is also one new food establishment planning to open Downtown in 2021 that also
wishes to participate in the annual program with at least two patios. With the existing
2019 participants and the current number of patios, we would not be able to meet this
demand or rent patios to other participants that wish to grow their patio number or start
participating in the program
Staff requested a formal quote from Western Precision Manufacturing that would
provide for the purchase of 11 canopy systems (giving the City 15 in total) and four (4)
new patio parklet (giving the City 32 in total). Once the City resumes the normal patio
program in 2022, it is anticipated that patios would again be rented to participants. The
canopy systems would be part of the rental, on a first come, first serve basis. Rather
than ordering canopy systems for all patios, staff would like to gauge the reception to
the systems from the restaurants in a pilot program. It is believed they will be most
desired by restaurants that do not have seating with umbrellas or existing shading.
The quote received from Western Precision Manufacturing is included as Attachment
#2. The price of the patios, highly dependent on lumber and other materials that have
experienced great pricing fluctuations, have increased in cost from $12,000 each to
$16,000 each. The vendor provided an alternative decking option for construction that
would save $1,000 on each patio; staff, however, would prefer to stay with the original
specification since there is not a more significant cost savings.
