5. When feasible, native plant material developed from local populations should be used, as local
genotypes are likely more suitable for Louisville's climate and soils than plants sourced from other
regions of the country. Exceptions to this standard: Open Space staff may use their professional
judgment to select non -local genotypes deemed more suitable for long-term population
persistence in a changing climate or genetic rescue of inbred populations of imperiled species in
need of urgent conservation action.
6. Grass reseeding efforts on open space should use one of the seed mixes described in the Open
Space Reclamation Standards. These seed mixes may be modified by Open Space staff according
to site -specific needs, in consultation with the seed provider.
7. Lands adjacent to open space are recommended to be landscaped in a character consistent
with these requirements, to form a transition area and more cohesive plant community. Open
Space staff shall be contacted as a referral for any plant materials being proposed on lands adjacent to
City open space through the Land Use Application or Development Review process.
8. These standards do not apply to open space parcels used for agricultural purposes, including
livestock grazing and crop production.
City -Wide Recommendations
1. In addition to use by the Open Space Division, these standards may be voluntarily adopted for
other City -owned properties and new private developments.
2. Other City departments considering using native plants are encouraged to consult with Open
Space staff regarding appropriate plant selection and suitable grass seed mixes.
11
