Recreation Advisory Board
Minutes
April 26, 2021
organization has had to turn teams away this year, because there are not
enough courts to rent for USTA matches. Terry came to the meeting to
advocate for keeping the courts that we have in good condition (surface, nets,
windscreens, etc.) and to encourage plans to add more courts in the future.
When asked about pickleball lines on the tennis courts, Terry confirmed
that the lines would make the tennis courts unusable for USTA league
matches.
Staff Updates
Outdoor Rec Amenities
• Nathan reported that substantive decisions won't occur until the next
biennial budget conversations. However, the results of a Community
Outdoor Recreation Amenity Survey, compiled in 2019, can give direction
for decisions.
• Even if major plans cannot be made now, board members would like to
know if and how there could be smaller changes to better manage what
we currently have. A previous example of this is the addition of pickleball
lines to the skating rink, which provides outdoor playing space for the
pickleball players at limited expense. A current example might be to repair
the combined tennis and pickleball court at Mission Greens Park, near
Lois Drive. Pickleball lines could be added in such a way as to have from
two to four pickleball courts, provided that players bring their own nets.
Terry reported that this court was used throughout the pandemic, even
though it is in bad condition.
• Terry Tessier shared information about the difficulty of finding enough
tennis courts for CVTA league play, which occurs at set times on weekday
evenings, weekday mornings, and weekends. CVTA rents courts from the
City, the school district, and other cities when possible. When asked if
additional courts at Centennial Park would be helpful, Terry responded
that the additions would be welcome, but not at the expense of losing
other courts elsewhere in the city. Courts with lights would be on the
CVTA wish list for the future.
• Board members discussed the fact that there will be competing demands
for the limited spaces available in Louisville for additional outdoor
recreational amenities. The Parks Board will also need to be involved in
making these decisions.
• Kathy Martin shared that the City runs youth tennis lessons and provides a
youth recreational tennis league program (CARA) in the summer.
3
