Recreation Advisory Board
Minutes
June 28, 2021
Short Term Goals:
1. Prevent deterioration of our facilities.
• Nathan reported that there is some money to make repairs, but not enough to
do everything that is needed. $16,000 is allocated for 2021, and another
$16,000 for 2022. Two of the Centennial Park court surfaces were completely
redone a few years ago, while the other two had cracks repaired. Those cracks
need to be repaired again, as weeds are growing up through the cracks. The
Mission Green court has structural problems, and it would need to be replaced,
rather than repaired.
• Regarding torn windscreens and net concerns, Nathan responded that staff
needs to be proactive with seasonal changes, which would keep everything in
better condition. Nathan will ask staff to check the condition of the courts,
including gaps under the fences.
• Board members mentioned the possibility of volunteer help to keep the courts
in better shape. Nathan reported that volunteers need to undergo a background
check, and that the city is not currently encouraging groups of volunteers.
2. Expand the availability of pickleball courts without losing tennis courts; provide for
both, rather than compete for facilities.
• Gene proposed that pickleball lines could be painted on some of the outdoor
basketball courts. Nathan reported that basketball courts in the following parks
would be an appropriate size: Heritage Park, Meadow Park, and Community
Park. Board members approved the proposal to add pickleball lines to these
courts, and asked that the rec center publicize these additions, once
completed. The board acknowledged that pickleball is a social activity which
works best with multiple courts in one location, but this is a first step to provide
additional pickleball courts in the city.
• These courts would be in addition to the courts in the skating rink, which were
added in 2019.
Intermediate Goals
1. Plan for the addition of two tennis courts at Centennial Park.
• Nathan reported that this could be considered in the 2023-24 budget plan.
2. Plan for the addition of two to four permanent pickleball courts with nets at
Cottonwood Park.
• This could also be considered in the 2023-24 budget plan.
3. Find a way to add lighting at the Centennial Park tennis courts and any new
dedicated pickleball courts.
• This is another item that could be considered in the 2023-24 budget plan. The
new LED lights are a vast improvement, but staff would have to consider
impacts to the neighborhood.
