Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
26 July 2021
Erika Carlson, owner, stated that they were not aware of any foundation issues and described
the current state of the foundation.
Haley summarized the property's compliance with the criteria.
Burg agreed and observed that the property had been identified in previous preservation reports
for the Jefferson Place area.
Klemme stated that it was a good candidate.
Burg stated that the siding looked to be contemporary and she expressed interest in what they
would learn about what was beneath the siding, as well as other aspects of the house, from an
assessment.
Dunlap asked if it was proposed to be called the Bottinelli House.
Haley clarified that it was just a probable cause hearing, not a landmarking one, but that could
be one of the naming options if it were landmarked.
General support voiced for probable cause.
Klemme moved and Burg seconded a motion to find probable cause. Motion passed
unanimously by roll call vote.
728 Grant Avenue
Bauer stated that the structure met the age criteria and was an excellent example of the Dutch
Colonial Revival Style. She explained that the property had historical ties to Harry Van Mater
and that it maintained physical and architectural integrity.
Haley observed that this was a clear-cut situation, especially as all seven criteria were strongly
met. She noted the architectural style was a great find.
Commissioners Burg and Keller agreed.
Dunlap noted that the National Fuel Company had been the main coal company in Louisville
and the Van mater family had also owned the Mercantile.
Burg asked if the assessment would be reviewed by the Commission even if the owners
decided not to do anything with the house.
Haley replied that the City would get a copy of the assessment and the Commission could ask
for additional updates or information about the assessment.
Bauer added that part of the required review process was that staff would look over a draft of
the assessment before signing off on a final draft. The Commission would see the assessment
as part of any applications regarding the structure and staff was also updating the Commission
on assessments at regular meeting, starting tonight.
Dunlap asked if the assessment presentations from applicants were optional.
PA,
