Bridget Bacon
Louisville Historical Museum
Department of Library & Museum Services
City of Louisville, Colorado
August 2021
I U Cityf
Om Louisville
COLORADO . SINCE 1878
601 McKinley Ave. History
Legal Description: South 10 feet of Lot 7 and all of Lots 8 & 9, Block 10, Louisville
Heights subdivision
Year of Construction: 1947
Summary: Ralph and Helen Grunkemeyer had this house constructed in 1947. He was
the town druggist at the Bungalow Drug Store on Main Street for twenty years, from
about 1934 until 1954. After his death in 1954, Helen continued to live with their
children at 601 McKinley and sold the house in 1977.
Development of the Louisville Heights Subdivision; Date of Construction
The Louisville Heights Addition in which this house sits was first developed in 1904 by
the Colorado Mortgage & Investment Co. Ltd. In 1905, the company conveyed many
of the lots in the Louisville Heights subdivision to Louisville residents John Affolter and
Dr. Charles Wolfer.
Related to the history of Block 10 of Louisville Heights are the facts that the Corrigan
addition to its west was platted in 1908 and that the Drumm's 1909 Map of Louisville
shows that there were no houses on any of these lots at that time. In fact, the majority
of their lots remained undeveloped for several decades, but they had common
ownership for a long time. The following excerpt of the 1909 shows these empty lots:
1
