Several Slovak families besides the Kasenga and Hibler family also owned or lived in homes in
the 500 and 600 block of Grant, south of Pine Street, including those with the surnames Harney,
Poydock, Mudrock, Haszier, Nortnik, Bodnar, and Kakalecik. More Slovak families lived on the
500 and 600 block of Lincoln, one street to the west.
Boulder County, on its 1948 Assessor Card for this address, stated that the house was "40+"
years old, suggesting that the exact date might not be known, but also somewhat inconsistently
gave "1908+" as the date of construction. On its current website, the County gives 1908 as the
date of construction, based on the date on the Assessor Card, but without suggesting that this
is not a definite date. Boulder County has sometimes been found to be in error with respect to
the construction dates of Louisville buildings, so other evidence is looked to. In this case, it
seems most likely that the house was constructed in or soon after 1905, which is the year in
which the developer sold it to Kasenga, who by that time had a family that included young
children. He did not own other property in Louisville. The relevant warranty deeds indicate that
Kasenga purchased the parcel for $60 in 1905 and sold it for $525 in 1908, suggesting that the
house was constructed during Kasenga's ownership. The 1909 Drumm's Wall Map of Louisville
shows the house in the correct location, so it seems clear that it was constructed by 1909.
Based on this evidence, the likely date of construction was circa 1905.
George Kasenga's younger brother, Joe, also emigrated from Slovakia to Pueblo and then to
Louisville. Joe stayed in Louisville after George and his wife and three children moved to Illinois
in about 1909.
Francesca Romano Ownership, 1908 - 1921
In 1908, Francesca (sometimes stated as Francisco) Romano purchased 614 Grant. She and her
family, however, are believed to have been living elsewhere in Louisville in another house that
she owned. Census records indicate that she was born in New York in about 1875 and that her
husband, Michael Romano, had been born in Italy in about 1866.
County property records show the owners of buildings, but not tenants, so the identities of
anyone who rented 614 Grant from Romano could not be located. In general, however, it is
believed that there was a market for rental homes in Louisville during the ownership by
Francesca Romano (and later owners) due to the many miners who came to Louisville in search
of work.
Arrambide Family Ownership, 1921-1947
In 1921, Francesca Romano sold 614 Grant to Luciano Arrambide. Arrambide (1888-1985) was
born in Cienega de Flores, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, and his wife Juana "Jennie" (1899-1965) was
born in Trinidad, Colorado. Luciano came to the U.S. in the early 1900s. At the time of the 1920
federal census, the Arrambide family was living at the Monarch Mine Camp south of Louisville,
but they had moved to 614 Grant by the time of the 1921 Louisville directory. The 1930 census
shows that the family of ten was living in the small house at 614 Grant. At that time, the family
2
