Library Board of Trustees
Director's Report September. 2021
Library Services Update
The only recent change to Library services is the City mandate on masks in all City facilities. Staff and patrons
alike are once again wearing masks, except when they are alone in closed offices or study rooms.
The Library will open at 10am Tuesday through Friday starting September 21'. With the rise of the Delta variant
and our continued staffing issues (hiring is difficult right now) we will continue to be closed on Saturday and
Monday through at least October.
Early Literacy Protects
YEAR REGISTERED 30 BOOKS 50 BOOKS
2019-2020 150 51 37
2020-2021 93 22 20
For the 2021-2022 50 Books in First Grade program, we're moving registration and milestone tracking to
Beanstack, although patrons will still get a paper folder because we believe this to be an important early literacy
element. The first -graders typically write the titles of each book on the paper log themselves.
This year, kids will receive a pencil and animal -shaped eraser at 30 books, and a free easy reader at 50 books.
In September, Kristen Bodine and Youth Services Librarian Lindsay Huth are presenting at the Colorado
Association of Libraries Conference on 50 Books in First Grade. We think other libraries might like to launch this
program that focuses on beginning readers and encourages patrons to ask us readers' advisory questions about
easy readers and transitional fiction.
Lindsay is also launching a program for the month of November for Kindergartners. Kids will come to the library
for a treasure map that leads them to different key areas around the Children's Department. The last spot is at
the Children's Desk, where we'll tell them the librarians are always here to answer their questions. We'll give
them a set of keys to open a treasure chest. From the treasure chest, they can pick a packet of puffy stickers
and a paper library card holder (that they could decorate using the stickers). We'll invite the kids to get a library
card if they don't already have one.
Gallery
As part of our commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, we have created new guidelines and a new process
for artists wishing to show in the Library's art gallery. The Library seeks to display work created by artists from
diverse backgrounds as well as artwork in a variety of mediums and formats. In the past the gallery has been
almost exclusively used by local artist groups, who are wonderful community partners. Now we are looking to
expand our horizons a bit and invite artists from around the area to apply to show in the space. Artists seeking
to display artwork at the Library will submit a completed application to Library staff that will be reviewed by a
selection committee. Applications are due by October 31, 2021.
