Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
21 June 2021
the coloring book project more than once a month. Agreement that the subcommittee would
make a list, which Planner Bauer would send to the commissioners to review, and they would
make the final decision next month after time for individual review. In that time, commissioners
could contact each other individually and Planner Bauer could serve as a liaison, but they could
not have an open discussion until the next regular meeting unless they call a special meeting in
the interim.
Dunlap asked if they could give direction to the artists.
Bauer replied that more guidance might increase the price but could be possible if they wanted
something beyond line drawings.
Dunlap asked if they wanted it to look more abstract or if they wanted it to look like a straight
line drawing. A discussion ensued about style options, with the conclusion that the artists could
present a few options that ranged between line -drawing and interpretive.
Discussion of whether the subcommittee wanted to move forward with an artist now, in which it
was agreed that the subcommittee had someone in mind.
Dunlap shared that the write-ups for the Downtown Business Association letter might be helpful
for the text. He thought coordinating on writing the text might be difficult.
Klemme stated that the descriptions in the online walking map were sufficient and the trickier
part would be the introduction to the book. General discussion that the map summaries were
short enough and that each entry could have a standard form with basic information, plus
individual stories such as the stones for the house on Garfield being moved individually from
Marshall. Social histories could provide that local color as needed. Those cool factoids and
stories could help tip the scales when deciding among which houses to include in the book.
The Commission discussed layouts, in which it was agreed to stick to either vertical or
horizontal and that a narrow, vertical view may serve the smaller lot sizes better.
Plaque Presentations
Bauer shared that there were 12 landmark plaques to give out and she asked if the Commission
wanted to wait until May 2022 to give them all out or if they wanted to plan a different way to
award them this year.
Klemme stated that August, September, and October could work, and they could be clustered
by area rather than the order in which they were landmarked. She preferred that the landmark
be honored at the property rather than in a room all at once.
Haley stated that weeknights might be fine as people are out and about in the summer, and on
summer weekends people might not be home.
Burg added that weeknights later in the week were a good idea for scheduling and as promotion
for the program and she liked doing 2-3 events.
Dunlap stated that there might be some people who didn't want a ceremony.
4
