LCityof
L of
PARKS, RECREATION & OPEN SPACE
Memorandum
To: Open Space Advisory Board
From: Steve Roels, Senior Natural Resource Specialist November
Date: 10th, 2021
Re: Discussion Item 8: Plant Community Surveys Update
Purpose:
The purpose of this update is to brief OSAB on the work of staff and contractors to document plant
communities and vegetative characteristics of Open Space parcels.
Background:
Quantitative plant community surveys were completed by a contractor on Davidson Mesa and
Aquarius Open Spaces from 2018-2020. These relatively high diversity sites required an
experienced botanist to survey accurately and efficiently. Beginning in 2020, staff adopted the
same sampling technique (cover point scope transects) to begin sampling lower diversity sites
elsewhere in the Open Space system, where an intermediate level of expertise is sufficient.
Thus far, staff have sampled Coyote Run, Daughenbaugh, Hecla Lake, North, and Warembourg
Open Spaces. Standardized quantitative sampling facilitates comparisons within and between
properties, highlighting priority areas for protection and potential areas for native plant
restoration. Sampling transects are permanently marked, allowing for future visits to assess
vegetation change over time.
Next Steps:
Staff will continue surveying Open Space properties in 2022.
Documents Attached: Power Point Presentation
11
