Bridget Bacon
Louisville Historical Museum
Department of Library & Museum Services
City of Louisville, Colorado
October 2021
I u Cityq Im Louisville
COLORADO • SINCE 1878
600 Lincoln Avenue History
Legal Description: Lots 11 & 12, Block 11, Pleasant Hill Addition, Louisville, Colorado
Year of Construction: 1904
Summary: This was the home of Paul Petrun and Mary Sirokman Petrun of Slovakia, and their
family, for 65 years.
Development of the Pleasant Hill Addition
The subdivision in which this house is located, the Pleasant Hill Addition, was platted in 1894.
The subdivision was developed in the name of Orrin Welch, the half-brother of Charles C.
Welch. Charles Welch was the person most responsible for the establishment of Louisville in
1878 after he established the first coal mine in this area in 1877. Orrin Welch is not known to
have ever lived in Colorado, and it is Charles C. Welch who is thought to have been the de facto
developer.
Petrun Family Ownership, 1904-1969; Date of Construction
Paul Petrun (1866-1959) purchased these lots from Orrin Welch in 1904 and appears to have
built the house the same year.
Paul Petrun and Mary Sirokman (1870-1968) married in Zaluzice, Slovakia in 1890. Their first
child, John, was born in Zaluzice in 1891. Paul Petrun came to Louisville that year, also,
according to his 1959 obituary as well as a news item in the Louisville Times in 1950 regarding
their 59th wedding anniversary. In the following year, 1892, Mary and their son joined Paul by
coming to Louisville accompanied by Mary's brother, George Sirokman. (The Sirokman family
came to have a strong presence in Louisville, as two other of their siblings also came to live in
the town.)
1
