The second photo with 728 Grant in the background is this one taken from the school (where
Memory Square Park is now located). It shows the north side of 728 Grant with no buildings
between it and Spruce Street. It is undated, but appears to have been taken in the 1920s. The
house at 728 Grant can be seen on the right, behind the car.
Minnie Rockley Ownership, 1936-1945
After a short period of ownership by Joseph Koeppler (1869-1950) in 1936, the ownership of
this property was transferred to Minnie Baessler Rockley (1891-1946). During this period,
however, she is listed in directories as living with her husband, Newton, elsewhere in Louisville.
The house may have been used as a rental or for a family member.
For a few months in 1945, the owners were Lester and Lillian Hefton.
Hutsell/Mullenix Family Ownership, 1945-1954 and 1954-1979
The next owners were William and Flora Hutsell. William Hutsell (1897-1976) worked as a coal
miner. He married Flora Runyan (1901-1985). They had several children, at least three of whom
lived with them in the house. Donald, Wayne, and William Jr. are listed in the 1951 directory as
residing with their parents at 728 Grant.
The Hutsells divided the property that originally made up 728 Grant in 1953. They moved a
house from the area of the University of Colorado in Boulder and placed it on the lot north of
728 Grant. This became 732 Grant. According to the Louisville Times dated Jun 11, 1953, they
then moved into 732 Grant and briefly rented 728 Grant to Norman and Luetta Gneiser and
their three children (and the Hutsells then sold 728 Grant in 1954).
It was during the Hutsell ownership that the Boulder County Assessor surveyed the property in
1948. The following 1948 photo and ground layout are from that card:
4
