(AV P am NY:
• . .
CAWI GATE:
4.e
Following Emma Browning's death in 1998, the house was sold in 1999.
Later Owners
In 1999, Caroline Smith purchased 1037 Walnut from the estate of Emma Browning. She sold it
in 2020 to Andrea Marie Runkel and Jean C. Verkley. They are the current owners of record.
Historical & Architectural Survey
In 2000, Carl McWilliams surveyed 1037 Walnut and completed an Architectural Inventory
Form that is attached to this report. As noted above, the survey gave the adjusted date of
construction of 1920 instead of an earlier date that appears on the 1948 and 1977 County
Assessor cards. This information impacts the period of significance (1920-1950) that the survey
indicates. The survey helpfully noted that the cards indicated that the house was renovated or
added onto in 1932. A record of the year when the front of the house was altered could not be
found in the 2000 survey or on either of the County Assessor cards.
The preceding research is based on a review of relevant and available online County property records, census records, oral
history interviews, Louisville directories, and Louisville Historical Museum maps, files, obituary records, and historical
photographs from the collection of the Louisville Historical Museum.
6
