L Louisville
COLORADO • SINCE 1878
Louisville Letter Play
"Louisville Letter Play" is a series of 20 2'x4' metal and ceramic panels lining the South Street
Pedestrian Underpass.
Created by Louisville artist Gregory Fields ( https://fieldscapes.com/ ) , the shapes spell out
"Louisville Colorado US" in playful metal and clay forms. The steel panels are designed to gradually
patina until they match the rust -colored railroad bridge overhead.
The piece was installed in summer of 2021, and was generously funded by the City of Louisville
through the Louisville Cultural Council. The art installation is envisaged as two parts.
The second part will be a sculpture, to be installed on the existing
pedestal at the west end of the South St Gateway.
The sculpture will measure approximately 10.5"' tall by 3' wide by
1'deep. It will be mounted to the existing concrete Pedestal. It
will include both structural support and decorative elements
made of richly carved ceramic artwork on the two front sides of
the piece and in a circular medallion on the top. The work will be
consistent with the existing letter play installation.
Before the sculpture can be commissioned and installed, the City
of Louisville needs to obtain permission from BNSF. The pedestal
is in the BNSF right-of-way. The Louisville Revitalization
Commission have agreed to fund the sculpture, once permission
is obtained.
About the LCC: Founded in 1989 as the Louisville Arts & Humanities Council, the LCC is a
volunteer advisory board of Louisville citizens. The Cultural Council has up to ten members that are
appointed by City Council. Members serve three-year terms, with the option to reapply at the end
of their term. LCC arts and events are supported by grants from the City of Louisville, sponsorships,
private gifts, and by ticket sales.
Agenda Packet P. 8
