He urged all affected families to be sure to file a claim
and go through the claims process. Make sure you know what you qualify for. He stated
people are getting very high numbers for rebuild costs that may not be accurate.
If after you file your claim, you find you are underinsured then please file a complaint with
the Division of Insurance. It is important people file complaints when they find a problem
so that the Division understands the full breadth of the problem.
Applying with FEMA and the SBA will be important help for anyone underinsured. He
asked people to keep in mind that actual rebuilding is months away and the inflation and
supply chain issues then will be different from what they are today.
Councilmember Dickinson stated it appears that underinsurance is a problem for almost
everyone; it appears to be systemic. He asked if there is a process in place to fix that.
Conway stated affordability concerns play into underinsurance. Large systemic issues will
be something the Division will investigate. He reiterated that people need to file their
claims as the Division won't know what the problems are if people don't file their claims.
Councilmember Most stated her research has shown that it can be very inexpensive to
get full replacement cost. She is concerned that people don't know they can request such
coverage and are being discouraged from getting that coverage it by insurance
companies. She would like to see the State address this. Conway stated the Division is
urging insurance companies to be reasonable and work with clients but if that is not the
case people should contact the Division with a complaint. He added the Division needs to
get out and educate people on what their options are.
Mayor Pro Tern Maloney stated education is needed for consumers and legislation is
needed to address these issues in the future.
