Recreation Advisory Board
Minutes
November 22, 2021
Recreation and Senior Services Update
Outdoor Rec Amenities
Pickleball
o Nathan Mosley reported that there should soon be progress with the project to
paint pickleball lines on the basketball courts in three city parks. This is a stopgap
measure, to provide something for pickleball players, until dedicated pickleball
courts can be planned, approved, and built. Players would have to bring their own
net and equipment.
o Board members mentioned that pickleball nets on wheels would be a good
alternative to the current net set-up, which involves carrying the metal components
to hold the nets, figuring out how to put them together, and then attaching the net.
Nets on wheels are easy to move around and place on the courts.
o Kathy Martin plans to submit a grant request to fund dedicated pickleball courts.
The funds would come from the American Recovery Act Fund, and the grant is
administered by the Area Agency on Aging. Board members appreciated the work
to seek the grant.
Playground at Cottonwood Park
o Nathan reported that City employees invited community input to determine what
type of playground equipment people want. He obtained a supplemental budget of
$60,000, in order to fund the project and include all of the pieces desired by the
community. This park will have the first zipline in the city.
o There is a long lead time to get equipment, which makes the project more
challenging.
Department updates
Nathan reported that the City Council extended an offer for the job of City Manager to
Jeff Durbin. If he accepts the offer, he will begin work in early 2022.
Nathan reported that Redtail Ridge will be considered by City Council again on
December 7. If Council approves the plan again, there will be a referendum in the
spring.
Senior tennis organization
Kathy reported that she and Jesse DeGraw met with a representative from Centennial
Valley Tennis Association (CVTA), and subsequently met with organizers of a weekly
drop -in senior tennis time. The senior tennis group organizers initiated the meeting,
because they would like to reserve courts and advertise the senior social tennis
through the rec center/senior center, rather than having the court reservations
managed by CVTA.
Kathy said that rec center personnel will need to look at court availability and discuss
whether or not to support a program that is geared toward a specific group. Kathy said
that the CVTA representative plans to meet with senior tennis group organizers.
