PARKS USING NEW MOWING PRACTICES

Tthe Parks Division is now mowing certain areas
differently than
in the past, or more spe-
cifically they are mowing
less often and allowing
non-irrigated areas to
switch

root system of a grass is roughly equal to the
staff keep these
type of grasses cut to 4 inches when naturally they are 1-2
feet tall, the area will never achieve good coverage.
can then lead to another problem. When coverage
is sparse it allows weed species to flourish. Weeds invade
bare areas within grass stands. By allowing the coverage to
increase through time, the weeds should decrease. Which
will therefore decrease the use of herbicides and mechani-
cal control.
Good grass coverage is key for retaining soil moisture,
mediating soil temperatures, and keeping erosion under
control. All of these factors contributed to the change in
management.
Another item to note; much of the "overgrown weeds"
out to are actually bunches of alfalfa.
species is a very important nitrogen fixer that helps
naturally fertilize the areas where they grow.
For additional information about the City's mow-
ing practices, please contact Parks Superintendent Dean
Johnson at deanj@louisvilleco.gov or 303.335,4774.

in management was initi-
ated a few years ago, but
many residents are now
noticing.
major reasons for
this change is to try and increase the coverage and overall
health of the non-irrigated areas that the City maintains.
When certain types of grasses are cut too short it stunts
their growth and keeps the grass from seeding on its own

,

north (south facing) side of Tyler Avenue near
Via Appia is a good example of this. It has very sparse
coverage and needs to be allowed to grow to maturity to
increase the coverage and build up stored energy in the
root system.

SUMMER OPEN SPACE ACTIVITIES

WITH
Wednesday,June 17,6:30 to 7:30 PM
Library Meeting Room
Is there a coyote living in your
neighborhood?
