Historical Commission
Minutes
November 17, 2021
Sharon and Bridget reported on the City Council's decision at this time not to fund the
previously authorized architectural schematic design work for the contemplated
museum expansion. The contract for that work was terminated in light of the
budgetary and other constraints imposed by Covid in the Spring of 2020. The Council,
however, is providing $37,500 for further community engagement on the issue of
museum expansion and to update the cost estimate contained in the prior conceptual
design. The History Foundation will provide an additional $12,500 for these efforts.
The outreach effort will include focus groups to help sort out the community's
perceptions of the need for and uses of an additional building. In addition, a plan for
additional storage for the Museum's collections will be developed.
Gigi Yang explained her work for the Museum. Her emphasis is on the issues and
policies related to access to, and conservation of the collections and exhibits. In
addition, she is a valuable contributor to the Museum's website and plays an
important role in the staff's interaction with the public, both in person and through
media. The members of the Commission expressed their appreciation for Gigi's
valuable contributions to the Museum's work.
Sharon described some of the work being done to further the goals and objectives of
the Council's EDI task force with a special emphasis on inclusivity. For example, there
is a need to further recognize different events that are important to various parts of
the community but which are sometimes overlooked or not celebrated by the City as a
whole.
Bridget and Sharon along with the Commission members expressed their appreciation
for Leah's work on the Commission during her term. Leah explained that she would
have liked to continue with the Commission but that her workload with the
publication of her new book (yea Leah!) did not permit it.
VI. Report from Sharon Nemechek, Director of Library Et Museum Services: Sharon
gave an update on the search for a new City Manager.
VII. Report from Bridget Bacon, Museum Services Supervisor:
In addition to the matters described in her written report, Bridget noted that the
Museum would be handing out treat bags during the Parade of Lights on December 3rd
She also stated that the Museum recently had a tour with Covid practices in place for
the second grade classes from Louisville Elementary School. This was the first in -
person second grade visit since the pandemic started.
Contractors are continuing their work to locate the Trott -Downer Cabins to near
Miners Field. Unfortunately there was a problem with the pouring of the foundations
which will have to be corrected. In addition, the Museum staff is considering how to
address the issue of protruding nails due to the rough nature of the construction.
While they add a degree of authenticity, there is an obvious safety issue.
City of Louisville
Louisville Historical Museum 749 Main Street Louisville CO 80027
303-335-4850 (phone) 303-335-4550 (fax) www.louisvilleco.gov/museum
