Mayor Meier

Councilman Leary

ELECTION WARD REDISTRICTING
STATUS REPORT

Mayor Meier

Councilman Leary

1/18/83

Page -19-

Commented that after a discussion with
Director Leesma.n relative to the increased
security will effect all the business areas,
not only the downtown area. Hopefully in
the near future, it was his feeling, everyone
will be aware of the improvement in these
areas and crime and buglary rate will decrease
substantially.

Remarked, if it is possible and if the
business men would agree, he suggested a
meeting be held periodically each month or
so to keep the communications open. Very
often when there is a crisis we have a flury
of activity, then it quickly dies down.
If the line of communication is kept open
it would more likely ensure improvement in
security.

Advised Director Rupp would be reporting on
this item, but Administrator Wurl wished to
make a statement - half the Council did not
wish maps, and the other half did wish them.
If council so wished, he could provide maps
with lines drawn for the the proposed re-
districing of the election wards. The
Planning Dept. divided the population in the
given areas and the maps were non-political
in staff's viewpoint.
Requested Administrator Wurl to provide
Council with the map.

Lnquired if there would be maps without lines
on them.so couneilmembers could review the
population figures.
Wurl advised the maps did have lines drawn
for the various wards and information would
be given how the population figures were
generated that appear on them. Map would
show a simple extension of the lines to ac-
comodate what has traditionally been the
division of the city in wards.
Wurl stated there was one map that would be im-
portant, probably in council's consideration,
and that would be actually placing the popu-
lation figures in the various surrounding sub-
divisions. HowE~ver, this particular map
was not available this evening.
