Open Space Advisory Board
Minutes
March 9, 2022
members thought it was a helpful location since it was at the top of a steep hill. For bench # 70
be mindful of location in regards to snow plowing efforts.
Davidson Mesa: Susan was concerned about location #18's impact on nesting burrowing
owls. Peter said that he felt like there could be more benches along the wester rim of the
property, since that is the iconic view from the city. He didn't like the bench at #73. Laura
commented that she thinks there are too many memorial benches at Davidson already: the
short grass makes them very visible. She said she could live with #75, but she really didn't like
#72 or #73. She was more ambivalent about #74. Peter didn't see the sandstone benches as
visual intrusions, but agreed that #73 was unnecessary. Charles and David agreed that #72
and #73 were unnecessary. Charles pointed out that there were no benches on the trail that
edges along the back of the Enclave community (northeast perimeter of the property). Laura
asked if there was a reason for that exclusion. Ember replied that there was no strong reason.
Peter suggested a bench across from #14 & 47 on the edge trail. The board agreed to move
#74 there. In general, the board was fine with keeping #75, but wanted to omit #72 & #73.
Plaza Location: The plan is for this intersection to be remade into a Plaza location that
will include a bench. The board liked this location.
9. Discussion Item: Updating 2022 OSAB Goals. Presented by David Blankinship,
OSAB Chair
Ember commented that the 2022 Goals document in the packet would be updated
according to the emails received today. The discussion of each goal area was presented by the
"lead person" on the document.
Acquisition: Jessamine removed the property ranking activity, as it was done last year.
Instead, there would be a revisiting of the ranking process to make sure it still serves board
needs and interests. Revision: goal 1.1 in Acquisitions should start with "Review Opportunities
for Preserving Open Space and Improving Connectivity process and worksheet to inform
Property Ranking activities in future years."
Trails: Charles pointed out that much of the social trails work has been tabled due to the
fire, but thought some trails tiger team updates could be included in the Trails category. David
suggested maybe putting the Davidson Mesa trail work as a goal. Ember said that there might
be some work for the Tiger Team to help create a plan to reopen the property in phases.
Resource Management: Susan is trying to pick up where Anneliese left off on dog
issues, but the issue has been challenging in the past. She and David will continue to try to
make a joint PPLAB/OSAB meeting happen. She was wondering if there were more pocket
prairies in the plans in 2022. Ember answered that there were several new locations and plans
that would be phased in over time. Peter asked whether pocket prairies could be dedicated as
memorials, like the benches. Ember said that living things (like trees) sometimes die or change,
creating an emotional burden on the city and the people who dedicated the memorial.
Wayfinding: Helen suggested no changes.
Education & Outreach: Laura suggested synching up the goals with the staff volunteer
requests from tonight's packet (Agenda Item 10). She added that, if staff will not be requesting
