Recreation Advisory Board
Minutes
March 28, 2022
Staffing Update
Kathy Martin reported that the recruitment for the Parks, Recreation and
Open Space Director is underway. The consultant is in the process of
reviewing the applications and will meet with the City Manager's Office to
bring forward candidates. One RAB member is invited to join the interview
process on April 25. Michele Van Pelt and Angie Layton volunteered to
participate. Kathy will contact them with further information.
Kathy reported that hiring staff has been difficult. A job fair on March 16 did
not generate a lot of applications. A fully -benefited life guard position has
been open for three months. The Rec Center needs Summer Day Camp
counselors, tennis instructors, coaches for Peewee Soccer, referees, and
umpires. Kathy already reduced the number of participants in Summer Day
Camp, but still does not have enough counselors. Full-time staff may have to
cover Summer Day Camp positions. Peewee Soccer may have to be
canceled. The lifeguard situation is looking OK, although the rec center had to
limit pool hours during spring break week. Kathy emphasized that the Rec
Center could be facing a substantial loss of revenue, possibly $50,000, if
popular programs have to be canceled or limited.
David Dean reported that he only had two applicants for job positions. David
Baril had plenty of applicants for after -school and weekend slots, but is having
trouble finding workers to cover day shifts. The Golf Course will have a job
fair on March 30, and everyone hopes for a good turnout.
Ginger Cross has been promoting the job fairs and advertising job openings.
HR is doing salary surveys and will consider bumping up salaries, although
Louisville pay is already in the upper middle range.
RAB members asked if programs can be shared or divided between our
recreation center and other neighboring recreation centers. Kathy said that
Louisville does coordinate with Lafayette, Erie, and Longmont, but everyone
is having a hard time hiring staff.
Gene Kutscher expressed appreciation that the Rec Center will begin
sponsoring senior social drop -in tennis.
Board Updates
Our next meeting will be held in person at the rec center. Kathy reported that
board meetings will be both in -person and online, in an effort to include
residents who have been forced to temporarily relocate after the fire.
