Library Board of Trustees
Director's Report July 14, 2022
Summer Reading= Uadate
The Library's Summer Reading Program has been a huge hit with patron of all ages. Children's
participation is up 47% over last year, adult participation is up 20% and teen participation is up a
whopping 61%. We have also hosted over 2,000 attendees at our ever -popular Summer Reading events.
Gun safety
At their June 7, 2022, meeting, Louisville City Council adopted several gun violence prevention
ordinances, which go into effect on July 12, 2022. The ordinances ban trigger activators, confirm that
the legal age to possess firearms in Louisville is 21, restrict the possession of firearms that lack serial
numbers ("ghost guns"), regulate the open carry of firearms in sensitive places, require certain signage
at firearms dealers, and impose a waiting period on the purchase of firearms.
Under the new ordinances neither open nor concealed carry of firearms is allowed in City facilities.
Because our Code of Conduct prohibits the "Brandishing of weapons or open display of weapons, except
for a firearm for which the individual possesses an open carry permit validly issued according to state
law," you may need to vote on a new policy relating to firearms. The City may need to revise or delay
the ordinances, so holding off until our next meeting is the best course of action.
Budget Process
The City is in the midst of our biennial budget process. As a Library, we are not making any significant
requests for next year. We've made two capital projects requests for future years - a Facilities Update in
2024 and an Automation Update in 2026. I've attached both requests.
The Library's operations budget will remain flat, with a standard cost increase accounted for.
EDI
The main EDI initiative this month is the new welcome message to be installed on the front doors of the
Library, Rec and Senior Center and City Hall. Erin Owen designed the message and worked with a
translator to make sure the language was appropriate.
all abilities
Bienvenue
all colors
(L)
L,,.
all cultures
E
Herzlich willkommen!
all sizes
3Ap
all genders
_
n
O
chao mu'ng
all beliefs
O
V
Han ]-I1
all languages
Bienvenidos
all ages
j
QFo
all types
(
Ao6po noN(anoearb
all people
'Allid
