LCiotyof
Louisville
Historical Museum
Memorandum
To: Historical Commission
From: Bridget Bacon, Museum Services Supervisor
Date: July 12, 2022
Re: Museum Services Supervisor's Report
I'm happy to announce Summer King as the new Museum Associate — Outreach Services,
and she started today!
The Museum has been active with putting on First Friday Art Walk events in June ("A World
of Noodles" with a pasta -making demonstration) and July ("Louisville Soda Parlor" with
complimentary mini -floats), and we've been putting history-themed Take & Make kits out
into the community each month. We love having the Courtyard for the Art Walks, and
appreciate all of the great feedback that that the Museum has received.
The staff's attention is now turning to planning the events for Louisville History Month in
September. Like last year, the main event will be the vintage base ball game! It is scheduled
for Saturday, Sept. 17 at 11 AM at Miners Field. Former Commission Chair (and current
Foundation director) Dan Mellish will be the team captain for the Louisville Miners team
this year. Other Louisville History Month programs and events will be the September Art
Walk and Take & Make, two walking tours, a science -based program on coal that is a
collaboration with the Library, and exhibits at the Library and Museum that Gigi Yang is
working on. The exhibit in the Library Gallery will be on "Louisville's Signs of the Times."
The front windows of the Museum will contain a small exhibit on "What's In a Name?"
about forgotten place names and the origins of place names in Louisville.
Meanwhile, we are making specific plans for moving the large collection items into the
storage unit and reorganizing the collection storage space at the Museum itself this fall.
The Museum has partnered with Dr. Kathryn Goldfarb of CU Boulder's Anthropology
Department, thanks to a $5,000 Promoting Public Impact grant focused on the Marshall Fire
from CU Boulder's Office of Outreach and Engagement and thanks to work by Jason Hogstad on
this project. The grant will provide the resources the Museum needs to secure the recording,
transcription, and post -processing work necessary to create a community archive of the
region's experiences with the Marshall Fire, its aftermath, and the ongoing recovery.
