The city was incorporated in 1882, and operates as a statutory municipality.
Coal mining was the major factor of Louisville's economy for several decades.
Today the City of Louisville is primarily a residential community that is located in north
central Colorado, approximately 20 miles northwest of Denver in southeast Boulder
County. Elevation is 5,480 feet above sea level. The city encompasses 7.44 square
miles and as of January 1, 1993 the population is estimated to be 14,815.
Governing Body
The city operates under a council -administrator form of government, whereby the city
council constitutes the city's legislative and governing body. The City Council
consists of six members. Two members are elected from each of the city's three
wards to serve staggered four year terms of office. The city council meetings, held
the first and third Tuesday of each month, are presided over by the Mayor, who is
elected at large to serve a four year term. The Mayor has all the powers, rights, and
privileges of a council member.
Organization
The city council appoints the city administrator to serve as the chief administrative
officer of the city. The city administrator serves at the pleasure of city council,
implements their policies, provides organizational leadership for addressing major
issues, direct business and administrative procedures and appoints department
directors.
The city council also appoints a city attorney, a municipal judge, a prosecuting
attorney and several separate boards and commissions to administer the operations
of certain services.
Services
The city provides a full range of local government services including police protection,
municipal court services, street and road maintenance, library, water and sewer
services, park and recreational activities, public improvements, planning and general
administration.
1
