City of Louisville, Colorado <br />1995 Annual Budget <br />General information <br />The City of Louisville was named after Louis Nawatny, a local landowner of the 1870's. The city was <br />incorporated in 1882, and operates as a statutory municipality. Coal mining was the major factor of <br />Louisville's economy for several decades. <br />Today the City of Louisville is primarily a residential community that is located in north central Colorado, <br />approximately 20 miles northwest of Denver in southeast Boulder County. Elevation is 5,480 feet above sea <br />level. The city encompasses 7.44 square miles and as of January 1, 1995 the population is estimated to be <br />18,085. <br />Governing Body <br />The city operates under a council -administrator form of government, whereby the city council constitutes the <br />city's legislative and governing body. The City Council consists of six members. Two members are elected <br />from each of the city's three wards to serve staggered four year terms of office. The city council meetings, <br />held the first and third Tuesday of each month, are presided over by the Mayor, who is elected at large to <br />serve a four year term. The Mayor has all the powers, rights, and privileges of a council member. <br />Organization <br />The city council appoints the city administrator to serve as the chief administrative officer of the city. The city <br />administrator serves at the pleasure of city council, implements their policies, provides organizational <br />leadership for addressing major issues, direct business and administrative procedures and appoints department <br />directors. <br />The city council also appoints a city attorney, a municipal judge, a prosecuting attorney and several separate <br />boards and commissions to administer the operations of certain services. <br />Cervices <br />The city provides a full range of local government services including police protection, municipal court <br />services, street and road maintenance, library, water and sewer services, park and recreational activities, <br />public improvements, planning and general administration. <br />1 <br />
