IX. Director's Report (S. Nemechek)
Sharon reported that summer reading participation has increased over last year with
2,850 participants. Unfortunately this is still down 10% from 2019 which the library uses
as a benchmark year for library programs and services.
Sharon reported that new gun safety ordinances were approved by the city of
Louisville. The library may need to rewrite a weapons policy but is waiting on the
ordinances to be enacted before doing so. Superior also passed some gun safety
ordinances but currently a lawsuit is pending so they have not been implemented yet.
Sharon shared that budget requests have been attached to the agenda. She is asking
for updated furnishings for upstairs. However, she will need to resubmit that request in
2 years as it was not approved. She is also requesting that the carpeting and paint get
updated as they are original to the building as well as updating the self -checkout
system as it has received several upgrades and is becoming very dated.
The library and other public buildings in Louisville will be installing welcome signs that
feature languages from around the globe.
Best-selling author Eleanor Brown will be in Superior in September. Her newest book
has received rave reviews this summer and she is currently on a national tour. This
event could be really successful for Superior in the library as a home.
The Flatirons Library Consortium is disbanding. Each library is now going to become
part of the Marmot Consortium. This is the biggest group in Colorado. Marmot already
facilitates many of the library systems and is a trusted Library partner throughout the
state. Transportation for requested books stays the same and patrons should not see
any difference in consortium service. Sharon's understanding is that first Marmut will
look at other former Flatirons Consortium members for books that patrons are
requesting and if none of those libraries have them available they will look to the
broader area. The service will actually cost the library less money than Flatirons.
X. Agenda Items for Next Meeting: September 8, 2022
The next meeting will be a joint meeting with the Library Foundation. Many years ago
when they were joint meetings members from both boards would go out for food and
drink afterward. The Board discussed different possibilities that would be friendly and
also covid appropriate. Laurel suggested reserving tables at an outside restaurant
downtown that would be Covid friendly. in the past the Library Foundation Board would
present what they did, their goals and their role in supporting the library.
