Lofy. .L'I
ouisville
Historical Museum
Memorandum
To: Historical Commission
From: Bridget Bacon, Museum Services Supervisor
Date: Sept. 13, 2022
Re: Museum Services Supervisor's Report
The last in the series of ten Museum workshops to help people in the aftermath of the
Marshall Fire took place at the end of August. The workshops each consisted of a station
where professional conservators could talk to people about how to clean and care for fire -
damaged objects that they retrieved; a scanning station where people could digitize photos
(on their own or with help) and learn best practices, whether or not they lost property; and
a station for story collection so that people could share their experiences of the fire or of
the aftermath through audio recordings. These ways of assisting people will continue, but
in other forms besides through the workshops. The story collection will continue by
appointment with the help of the $5,000 grant from CU Boulder's Office of Outreach and
Engagement and through the Museum's partnership with Dr. Kathryn Goldfarb of CU
Boulder's Anthropology Dept. In terms of scanning assistance, the scanner in the Library's
Makerspace is available for the public to use for scanning photos. Last, the Museum staff
has heard from people that there is interest in the Museum bringing back conservators for
another session or two, in order to help people who weren't able or weren't ready to come
to any of the previous workshops. The Museum staff is talking about the possibility of
scheduling a few of these in 2023.
As the Museum makes plans to have the funds from membership dues go to the City instead of
to the Foundation starting in January 2023, we have been working on evaluating possible
software options for people to join and renew online. The majority of payments are still made
using checks as the form of payment, and the one change to that system that the public will see
is who they will make the check out to.
The Department of Library & Museum Services has been renamed as the Cultural Services
Department.
We are partway through the events of Louisville History Month! It was great to see some of
you at the appreciation reception for Museum members on Sept. 71n
