Open Space Advisory Board
Minutes
August 10, 2022
property. Susan replied that she saw that sometimes, but in general the Weed
Whackers would respond to weed "hot spots" identified by staff.
Laura asked how communication worked with the Weed Whacker back in the day:
email? text? social media? Susan said generally email. Laura wondered how modes of
communication and the City's policy on volunteer background checks create obstacles
for potential volunteers. Laura asked if the Weed Whackers could decouple from the city
and then circumvent the some of the potential impediments for people interested in
volunteering, such as background checks, signing up for Event Brite, and using
Facebook.
Susan said their group felt like it had a fair amount of autonomy. They worked with
Catherine, but also picked their own dates and where they worked. They had annual
parties.
The board expressed it gratitude for Susan's enthusiasm for the Weed Whackers and
wanted to support the effort.
9. Discussion Item: Review and Provide Updates to 2022 OSAB Goals. Presented by
David Blankinship, OSAB Chair
Board members revised the goals document via email after the July meeting. David
asked for feedback about the document as currently written.
Education: Laura commented that the board could add that item 2.3 was discussed at
the current August meeting. She added that she wasn't sure that item 3.1 was going to
happen this year, but Jessamine reminded the board that Peter was going to write up a
summary of his review of the code enforcement rules, and some of this might fit into his
analysis.
Trails: Charles wanted to add an item that about giving the board a chance to provide
feedback on the proposed $600k CCT trail CIP. Laura suggested making it a discussion
item at a future meeting.
Resource Management: Susan said the September joint PPLAB meeting should address
some of these goals. She also added a goal of having the new Ranger Naturalist come
to talk about his vision for the Open Space.
General Business: David asked if there was anything OSAB could do to help with
advocacy on the Marshall Fire Response. Jessamine pointed out we need to correct the
dates on item 3.4: the board discussed the Redtail Ridge proposal at the May meeting
and voted in June.
10. Discussion Items for the Next Meeting on Wednesday, September 14, 2022.
A. Joint OSAB & PPLAB Meeting
B. Acquisition review discussion item (October?).
C. Give Peter a chance to speak to the board about code issues (maybe in a short
discussion before the joint meeting starts?) and a memo of appreciation for Peter.
