PROPOSED PROCLAMATION OF -ENTAL ILLNESS AWARENESS WEEK
.....WHEREAS, the week of October 6 through 12 is being observed across the United
States as MENTAL ILLNESS AWARENESS WEEK, and
.....WHEREAS, the Boulder County Alliance for the Mentally Ill, the Mental Health
Center of Boulder County, the Boulder County Mental Health Foundation, the Friends
of Maslin House, and the Boulder Committee on Disabilities have joined together to
co-sponsor the observance of this week in Boulder County, and
.....WHEREAS, these groups have chosen to observe the week by helping the public
learn the facts about major mental illnesses and about those persons who suffer
from them, in the hope that facts will help to banish the stigma and blame caused
by misinformation and stereotypes, and
.....WHEREAS, statistics show that one out of one hundred persons will suffer from
schizophrenia during his or her lifetime, and an even larger number will experience
an affective disorder, and
.....WHEREAS, the families and friends of these people also experience great pain
from these illnesses, and
.....WHEREAS, the community suffers a profound loss of the potential talents and
contributions of these afflicted citizens, and
.....WHEREAS, the sponsoring groups believe that greater awareness about major mental
illnesses will lead to more understanding and sympathy for those who experience
mental illness, greater support for programs that help persons with mental illness
to live in their communities, and increased funding for research to find causes,
controls, and eventually cures for these devastating diseases,
-1-
