P R O C L A M A T I O N <br />WHEREAS, one fire death is too many and during 1985 there <br />were nearly 40 deaths in Colorado resulting from fire; and <br />WHEREAS, the majority of fires (80%) and fire deaths occur <br />in the home with the principal reasons for these tragedies being <br />a lack of functioning early warning devices in the home and <br />individuals fail to act appropriately in the event of fire; and <br />WHEREAS, the average American experiences 3 fires during <br />their adult lifetime, yet many people continue to believe they <br />will not ever be faced with a fire and therefore have a disregard <br />for the importance of planning and practicing for the event of a <br />fire; and <br />WHEREAS, it is well known that fire drills save lives and <br />are therefore mandated in high risk occupancies such as schools, <br />but are not practiced at home where 80% of all fires occur; and <br />WHEREAS, the PLAN TO GET OUT. ALIVE. family fire drill, <br />which will be held on October 9, 1986 at 6:00 p.m., provides <br />families in Colorado an opportunity to plan for their safety at <br />home and to practice their plan; and <br />WHEREAS, on that date Colorado will become one of two states <br />to hold a statewide family fire drill for the first time ever in <br />the history of the nation; <br />NOW THEREFORE, I HERMAN FAUSON, Mayor of the City of <br />Lousiville, Colorado, do hereby proclaim October 9th, 1986 as <br />FAMILY FIRE DRILL DAY <br />in the City of Louisville, Colorado and urge all families to <br />become more aware of what they can do to plan and practice fire <br />safety at home and to participate in the PLAN TO GET OUT.
