OLDER AMERICANS MONTH <br />MAY 2005 <br />WHEREAS, our community is blessed with the wisdom and grace of older <br />individuals. <br />WHEREAS, maintaining health, relationships and sense of purpose for <br />older adults is vital to our community as they fill many social <br />roles, such as consumers, volunteers, leaders and workers. <br />WHEREAS, keeping older adults connected to the community is essential <br />for their well being and benefits us all. <br />WHEREAS, while the majority of older adults in the U.S. are thriving, a <br />smaller, yet sizeable, minority have multiple issues such as <br />poor health, limitations in daily activities and limited <br />inadequate incomes. <br />WHEREAS, the older people will become a much larger percentage of the <br />population of Boulder County as the baby boom generation <br />ages. <br />WHEREAS, the number of older adults (ages 6o+) in Boulder County is <br />forecasted to increase from 11% of the total population to <br />23 % of the total population over the next 25 years. <br />WHEREAS, responding to our aging population will require changes in <br />attitude, cultural expectations and social policies. <br />WHEREAS, adopting the Elder -Friendly Community model, the City of <br />Louisville will be prepared to both meet the needs and access <br />the strengths of its older population addressing basic needs; <br />optimizing physical and mental health and well-being; <br />promoting social and civic engagement; and maximizing <br />independence for the frail and disabled. <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that I, Mayor Charles Sisk, hereby <br />proclaim May as OLDER AMERICANS MONTH IN <br />LOUISVILLE, COLORADO and call on all citizens to join <br />with us in saluting and acknowledging the contribution of <br />Louisville's diverse, unique and vibrant older population <br />during May and throughout the year. <br />DATED this 3rd day of May 2005. /W <br />Charles Sisk,ayor <br />ATTEST: <br />SEAL,', 4-e4A Ua <br />ancy Varra, ity Clerk <br />®t0 <br />
