C�ty�f LL Louisville <br />Memorandum <br />To: Open Space Advisory Board <br />From: Ember Brignull, Open Space Manager <br />Fiona Garvin, OSAB Member <br />Mike Schantz, OSAB Member <br />Date: October 10, 2018 <br />Re: Discussion Item 7: Board Updates: Dog Tiger Team- Dog Recreation Area <br />Best Practices <br />Purpose: <br />The purpose of this Discussion Item is for the Dog Tiger Team members to share the Parks <br />and Public Landscape Advisory Board (PPLAB) comments regarding the "Best Practices" <br />document which PPLAB members reviewed at their October board meeting. The Dog Tiger <br />Team will incorporate PPLAB and OSAB comments into the draft document before finalizing <br />for future staff and public review. Background material provided for references only include: <br />"Dog Park Siting and Features Research" no action will be taken on this material. <br />Background: <br />In response to community concerns related to dog -related recreation, dog park <br />locations, and dog facility management, PPLAB and OSAB board members established a <br />joint subcommittee, referred to as the Dog Tiger Team. This team, comprised of Mike <br />Shantz and Fiona Garvin from OSAB and David Clabots from PPLAB, researched best <br />practices related to providing and managing dog recreation areas. Key materials <br />reviewed included: <br />1. Ann Arbor Advisory Committee Recommendations <br />- contains information about Ann Arbor MI plus 18 other communities <br />- communities vary in size, elevation, and climate <br />2. Dog Park information from 13 Western communities' websites <br />- all of the communities are in a similar climactic region to Louisville <br />- 6 of the communities are of a similar population to Louisville <br />After researching and reviewing the above sources, the sub -committee developed a <br />draft of "Best Practices" for Louisville, presented (with rationale) following this memo. <br />
